According to an article in the Los Angeles Times, the average American woman weighs 162.9 pounds and wears size 14. This means that more than half of the American female population wears plus size clothing! Plus size women are everywhere. In fact, they are the majority.
In the broadest sense, women who wear plus size clothing are just like women who wear smaller sizes. They range in age from young college age women to senior citizens. Their individual tastes vary greatly. They come in all shapes, and when they shop, they search for clothing designs that will flatter their unique body type. Just like all women, plus size women shop for all types of clothing including professional wear, casual wear, athletic clothing, sexy lingerie, and outer wear. They are, of course, looking to add the latest fashion to their wardrobe.
Over years of shopping, most plus size women become disappointed with the lack of variety and styles in the full figured section of clothing stores. So often, plus size clothing is frumpy and unimaginative. What makes this even worse is the fact that most of the time the plus size section is relegated to the back of the department which forces a plus size shopper to walk through the very stylish smaller sizes to get to the plus size section. After seeing all the cute styles offered in the petite sizes, they end up shopping in a section that doesn’t offer them. This can be unbelievably frustrating.
Some plus size women struggle with self-image. This is not surprising considering petite size of most Hollywood actresses and clothing models. This self doubt is unfortunately reinforced when they have trouble finding stylish clothing in their size. However, many plus size women are learning to embrace their size, and in doing so, demand more stylish plus size fashions. Plus size women have a lot a buying power and the more they exert it, the more the clothing industry will have to take notice.
